Antony P. Ressler was born to a Jewish family on October 12, 1960. He was one of 5 children born to lawyer and World War II veteran Ira Ressler and his wife Dorothy.
He attended Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service and earned a BSFS from there. He then attended Columbia University’s Graduate School of Business and graduated with his MBA.
As soon as he graduated from the university, Tony found employment at Drexel Burnham Lambert and eventually made it to the position of senior vice president focused in the high yield bond division with responsibility for the syndicate desk/new issue.
In 1990, while Drexel Burnham Lambert was on the brink of collapse, he co-founded the private equity company Apollo Global Management with : Craig Cogut, a legal representative who worked with Drexel’s high-yield department in Los Angeles; John Hannan, former co-director of international finance at Drexel; Leon Black, Drexel’s managing director, co-head of the Corporate Finance Division, and head of the Mergers & Acquisitions Group; Arthur Bilger, the former chief of the Drexel’s corporate finance division; and Michael Gross Marc Rowan , and Josh Harris, who all worked under Leon Black in the mergers & acquisitions division.
In 1997, he combined with John H. Kissick and Bennett Rosenthal, and they formed Ares Management. John is a former co-worker at Apollo Global Management, and Bennett joined the group from the leveraged finance group at Merrill Lynch.
Antony Ressler was a member of an investment group that in 2005, made a successful bid spearheaded by Mark Attanasio to acquire the Milwaukee Brewers of the Major League Baseball.
In 2015, he formed a group that comprised of Rick Schnall, Steven Price, Jesse Itzler, Sara Blakely, and former NBA player Grant Hill, and they acquired the Atlanta Hawks franchise of the National Basketball Association.
