Dan Houser is an English video game creator, writer, and voice actor. Along with his brother Sam Houser, he founded the popular video game brand Rockstar Games. He has served as vice president of creativity for the company. Along with creating video games, Dan was the head writer for Rockstar, being the lead for several games such as Max Payne 3, Bully, and Red Dead Redemption. Additionally, he has also written or co-written, nearly all of the titles in the highly popular and successful Grand Theft Auto series. Houser was born in London in England around 1973 or 1974. His parents were actress Geraldine Moffat and lawyer Walter Houser. He studied Geography.

Growing up, Dan and his brother wanted to be musicians despite having the passion for storytelling. The boys lived in a house that was adjacent to a video library in London, so it was easy for them to watch lots of American crime and cult movies and Spaghetti Westerns. Dan has revealed that he is a fan of one of Walter Hill‘s films titled ‘The Warriors’, and Rockstar Games even released a video game version of the film in the year 2005.

In 1995, Dan Houser got a small part-time job at BMG Interactive music label. He was tasked with testing CD-ROMs, although he was not a full-time staff until 1996. Along the line, Dan and his brother later became engrossed in the video game ‘Race’n’Chase’ which was being created by DMA Design after receiving a preview of the game. The brothers signed Race’n’Chase to BMG as the publisher and renamed the game to ‘Grand Theft Auto’ (GTA).

Following the acquisition of BMG Interactive by Take-Two in 1998, Dan and his brother moved to New York with the company, and founded their own company named Rockstar Games. He has stated that the Nitendo 64 games 3D Mario and Zelda were the earliest influences on his work.

Dan Houser is credited as producer for five Grand Theft Auto games. He also serves as a voice artist as well as writer for the series. In February 2020, Take-Two Interactive, which is the parent company of Rockstar Games, announced Dan’s resignation from Rockstar Games. He left the company on 11 March 2020, following an extensive break in 2019.
