Early Life

Marie York was born Marie Denise DeBartolo in the year 1950 in Youngstown, Ohio, the United States. She was raised in a family that was famous and made its wealth from real estate development. Her father was the construction tycoon Edward J. DeBartolo Sr., and her mother, the late Marie Patricia Montani DeBartolo.

When she was done with high school, she joined a Catholic women’s college named Saint Mary’s College of Indiana, located near the University of Notre Dame. She graduated from the said institution before embarking on her career journey.

Professional Life

After graduating from Saint Mary’s College of Indiana, Denise York joined the family’s business, The DeBartolo Corporation, and assumed the position of its executive vice president. After her father died in 1994, she became the company’s co-chair and all 78 malls owned by the company were sold.

In 1978, Edward DeBartolo Sr. purchased the National Hockey League franchise Pittsburgh Penguins and appointed Ms. York as owner and president. She presided over the team during the 1990–91 championship season, and was the third woman in history to serve as president of a team that won a Stanley Cup. In 1991, the year following the championship, York sold the Penguins to help the DeBartolo Corporation which was struggling in the aftermath of the 1987 real estate collapse.

In 1999 when Edward DeBartolo Jr. was convicted of felony in the former Louisiana governor Edwin Edwards scandal, Denise York became operating head of the San Francisco 49ers team which her brother owned. Although Edward could have resumed control of the team after a year after he was suspended, he decided instead to hand his controlling stake in the 49ers over to his sister and her husband in return for other shares of the family business. York and her husband have since handed over control of the 49ers team to their eldest son, Jed York.

The San Francisco 49ers franchise has a business arm known as the 49ers Enterprises. On May 24, 2018, the York family through the 49ers Enterprises purchased shares in Leeds United football club of the English Premier League to become a minority investor.
