After graduating from college, he started working in the cardiology department of a local hospital in Perm and also started raising a family with his wife.

Immediately after graduating from medical school, Dmitry started to venture into the world of business which really got him fascinated. At first, he worked hand-in-hand with his father to discover a new kind of medical treatment procedure involving magnetic fields. What shifted his focus was the economic uncertainty caused by the collapse of the Soviet Union at the time. Because of the demands, customers were likely to pay Dmitry with different products rather than real cash. In turn, Dmitry was forced to start a new business to market these products. This is when his business career started to take off.
By 1992, he had relocated to Moscow. He was dealing with and trading securities before launching an investment company. He then instituted his own bank, and through the mid-90s he had concentrated almost completely on investments in the rising potash industry. Eventually, he became involved with Uralkali, a Russian producer and exporter of potash. Over the years, he made this company a major player on the international stage. In 2010, Dmitry purchased a 9.7 percent stake in the Bank of Cyprus. After moving to Monaco that year, he then acquired a majority stake in AS Monaco Football Club of the French Ligue 2. In 2008, his wife filed for divorce, claiming that the businessman had been unfaithful on countless occasions. During his divorce, Dmitry sold his shares in Uralkali for the sum $6.5 billion in 2010. In late May 2014, a court ordered him to pay his former wife $4.5 billion in a divorce settlement. The settlement was later reduced to $604 million. In 2015, Dmitry and Elena finally reached a cordial settlement, although the details of this were never publicized.
For his hobbies and personal interests, Dmitry enjoys surfing, particularly in Hawaii. He is also engaged in yachting and sailing, being the owner of the superyacht Anna I which cost him €80 million.
