Early Life

Hui Ka Yan was born on 9 October 1958 into a rural family in Jutaigang Village, Gaoxian Township, Taikang County, in Henan, China. His father, a retired soldier, became a warehouseman in his home village after the establishment of the Communist State. His mother died of sepsis when he was less than a year old. He was raised by his paternal grandma.

After completing his high school education, Hui worked in a cement production factory for some days and then worked at home for two years.

He resumed the college entrance examination in 1978 and was accepted to the Wuhan Institute of Iron and Steel (now known as the Wuhan University of Science and Technology. He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in metallurgy in 1982.

Professional Life

After completing his bachelor’s degree, Hui was assigned to the heat-treatment facility of Wuyang Iron and Steel Company where he became an associate director in 1983 and was promoted to director in 1985. He held the director position for seven years until his resignation in 1992. From there, he moved to Shenzhen, in southeast China’s Guangdong province where he was accepted by a trading company called Zhongda. The following year he became president of one of its branch offices.

On October 1, 1994, Mr. Hui moved to Guangzhou, the capital of Guangdong province. There, he established the Guangzhou Pengda Industrial Co., Ltd. Two years later he left Zhongda Group after unsuccessful negotiation with the head of this company.

In March 1997 he founded the Evergrande Group and became the board chairman. He is also the owner of Guangzhou Evergrande football club, one of the most successful football clubs in China.
