John Sall is the executive vice president of the world’s leading business analytics software vendor SAS, which he also co-founded. He heads the JMP business division, which develops interactive and highly visual statistical discovery software programs designed for scientists and engineers, to date, he remains the primary architect of the JMP software. He was born John P. Sall in Rockford, Illinois, United States in the year 1948, and was raised by his parents in the same town of his birth.

When the time was right, he attended Beloit College in Beloit, Wisconsin, and graduated with his bachelor’s degree in history. Feeling that he graduated into a weak job market, John went to graduate school at Northern Illinois University and completed a master’s degree in economics. It was during his time at graduate school that he picked interest in statistics and computer science. He subsequently went on to study statistics at North Carolina State University, bagging an honorary doctorate for himself in 2003.

Professional Life: Entrepreneurial Career

During his time at North Carolina State University, John Sall had the privilege of being mentored by Mr.  James Goodnight In 1976, the two of them joined others from the University, Jane Helwig and Anthony James Barr in founding SAS Institute. SAS is an analytics software company established to analyze agricultural data. John Sall designed, developed, and documented most of the earliest procedures of the SAS language, and also started developing JMP in the 1980s.

Together with a small group of developers, John Sall spent more than 18 months working on JMP before the first version of it was released in October 1989. He continued coding and developing products for the JMP software for more than two decades, supporting Windows 3.1, re-writing the product’s “nervous system”, writing the product in different implementation languages, and improving the scripting language.

Today, Mr. John Sall is still known to be the chief architect of JMP. He has co-authored a book titled “JMP Start Statistics” together with Ann Lehman and Lee Creighton.
