His ancestral surname is Huang (黃), and his parents were of Hakka originality from Mei County in Guangdong province.
He attended the University of Witwatersrand from which he graduated with his bachelor’s degree in medicine at age 23. He completed his medical internship at the General Hospital in Johannesburg. Moving on, he studied at the University of British Columbia and graduated with a master’s degree in 1979. Afterward, he moved to the United States and started surgical training at the University of California, Los Angeles, and became a board-certified surgeon in the year 1984.
