He was born Theodore John Leonsis in the Brooklyn borough of New York City, New York, United States, on January 8, 1957, to a family of Greek immigrant parents.
When his high school guidance counselor assessed his skill set, the counselor determined that young Ted was predestined to work in a grocery store. He mowed lawns during his youth for extra money. One day while doing his job, he stumbled upon mowing the lawn that was owned by Jim Shannon, a rich stockbroker and Georgetown alumnus. Impressed by the young Leonsis, Jim helped him gain admission into Georgetown University.
After completing a few years at Brooklyn Technical High School, Ted moved to attend Lowell High School in Lowell, Massachusetts, from where he graduated in 1973. He was the first in his whole family to go to college when he attended Georgetown University for his undergraduate education, majoring in American Studies. He graduated top of his class in 1977.
