Warren’s father, Jackson Stephens, and his uncle, Witt Stephens, teamed up to invest in the investment company, Stephens Inc.

In 1975, he completed his studies at Trinity Presbyterian High School in Montgomery, Alabama. From there, he joined Washington and Lee University, graduating in 1979 with a BA in Economics. He then received an MBA from Wake Forest University in 1981.

Professional Life: Entrepreneurial Career

After completing his education, Stephens joined his father and uncle in their business in Little Rock, at a time that it had 139 employees. The investment bank is noted for handling the initial public offering of the Walmart Stores in 1970.

Initially, Warren Stephens began working at the firm as an associate in the corporate finance department, with an interest in oil and gas. He was appointed head of the department in 1983 and was responsible for mergers and acquisitions. In 1986, he assumed the roles of president and chief executive officer of the firm.

In 1990, he acted as the senior advisor to Tyson Foods in their acquirement of Holly Farms in a takeover battle that lasted nine months. He is only the third chief executive officer, chairman, and president in the firm’s over 80 years of operations since 1933.
