Mr. Gregorio Perez Companc is an investor and businessman, considered to be one of the wealthiest persons in Argentina. Through his investment company, Goyaike, he owns more than 740,000 acres of land in Argentina, on which he produces milk and wool, and rears crops and cattle. In addition to being the majority shareholder of Molinos Rio de la Plata, this businessman also owns the Argentina based ice-cream chain Munchi. Born in 1934 as Jorge Gregorio Bazan, a local revered socialite Margarita Companc de Perez Acuna adopted him in 1945. In 1968, his family acquired Banco Río de La Plata, one of the top private sector banks in the country.. His foster father founded the oil and gas firm Petrolera Pérez Companc in 1946, and Gregorio served as the head, and earned the majority of his fortune here alone. In 1993, he bought a major stake in the family’s bank from his sibling, and later sold the shares to Banco Santander in 1997. Currently 87 years old, Mr. Gregorio was born on 23 December 1934 in Buenos Aires City, Argentina. After he was adopted by a local socialite named Margarita Companc de Pérez Acuña in 1945, he enrolled in La Salle college preparatory school for his studies, though he left before graduating.
Professional Life
Mr. Gregorio, was, in 1968, named director of the Banco Río de La Plata. It was the largest, private-sector banks in Argentina at that time. His family purchased the bank from its former owners and were responsible for the running of its activities.
Most of his wealth has been built as head of his family’s oil and gas firm Petrolera Pérez Companc, which was first founded by Gregorio’s adoptive father in 1946. After purchasing a controlling stake in Banco Río de la Plata from his brother in 1993, Gregorio his shares to Spanish banking group Banco Santander in 1997.
In 2002, he scored a big coup when he announced the sale of the family’s 60 percent stake of Petrolera Pérez Companc to Brazilian oil conglomerate Petroleo Brasileiro S.A. (Petrobras) for an estimated $1 billion in cash and bonds.
In December 2009, Perez decided to step aside from his companies, thereby withdrawing himself from active involvement in the business. He left his eight children in control of all his business interests, as well as his entire stake in food giant Molinos Rio de la Plata.
Personal Life
In 1964, Gregorio Perez Companac married María del Carmen Sundblad Beccar Varela and since then, they’ve stayed happily united in matrimony. They have eight children together, including Catalina, Pablo, Cecilia, Luis, Margarita, Jorge, Rosario, and Pilar.
The family is deeply religious and have generously donated to Catholic Charities over the years.
