Austrian businesswoman Heidi Horten is the widow of the billionaire entrepreneur Helmut Horten. After the death of her husband, Heidi inherited his assets and finances as well, including the widely popular German department store business, Horten AG, which was founded by the late Helmut Horten. Born in Austria in 1941, Heidi was nineteen years old in the year 1960 when she met the late businessman who was 32 years her senior in a bar in Velden am Wörthersee. Helmut Horten was a German businessman who, from the ground up, single-handedly built the fourth-largest department store chain in Germany known as the Horten AG. He was a son of a judge who worked in department stores in Germany as an apprentice before he took control of the business in the year 1933, taking over from the Jewish owners. The Nazis came into power around this time, so the owners of the business fled to the United States in order to save their lives. When he was ready to grow his business, Helmut received the necessary financial assistance from Disconto Bank and Wilhelm Reinhold of the Commerz. He married his bride on July 23, 1966 in Düsseldorf-Lohausen and they both moved to Croglio in the Swiss canton of Ticino before the end of 1968. The late Mr. Horten introduced the country’s first-ever supermarket after a short trip to the United States. Copying the business model he discovered during his visit, his group expanded quickly, and by the end of 1968, was reported to have a turnover of more than a billion euros.
