The “SUN” in the name of the company was actually a reference to “Stanford University Network”, which is a computer workstation that was initiated and created by Vinod’s co-founder Andy Bechtolsheim while both men were graduate students.

Vinod’s Sun Microsystems was profitable within the first year of its existed. Scott McNealy was made chief operating officer of the company in 1984, taking over from Vinod. He would go on to serve as the company’s chief executive officer for the next 22 years, until his resignation in 2006.
